Summary

The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar Program is a major welfare initiative launched by the Government of Punjab under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz. The program is designed to address one of the most basic needs of people—safe and affordable housing—by helping low-income families who do not own homes. It reflects the government’s broader vision of improving living standards and reducing poverty across the province.

Under this scheme, the government plans to construct around 100,000 houses and apartments within a period of four and a half years. These housing units will be developed in both urban and rural areas to ensure equal opportunities for all residents of Punjab. The primary focus is on individuals who are currently living in rented homes or informal settlements and are unable to build their own houses due to financial limitations.

The implementation of the program is being handled by Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency, while oversight is provided by Housing Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Department. To make the program more flexible and effective, the government has introduced three execution models: direct construction by the government, collaboration with private developers, and financial assistance for individuals who already own land and want to build their own homes.

The main objective of this initiative is to provide permanent housing solutions to deserving families, reduce the financial burden of rent, and improve overall quality of life. It also aims to reduce overcrowding in cities and eliminate poor living conditions by developing organized and well-planned communities.

The expected benefits of the program are both social and economic. Families will gain access to better living conditions, including proper sanitation, clean water, and electricity, leading to healthier lifestyles. Secure housing will also provide a sense of safety and stability. At the same time, the construction of such a large number of houses is expected to create approximately 500,000 jobs, boosting employment and supporting the construction industry as well as the wider economy.

To ensure that the benefits reach the right people, strict eligibility criteria have been set. Applicants must be the head of their family, permanent residents of Punjab, and owners of a small piece of land within specified limits. They must also have a clean legal and financial record and be registered in the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) with a PMT score of 60 or below.

Overall, the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar Program is a transformative step toward solving housing problems in Punjab. It not only provides homes but also promotes economic growth, social stability, and community development. For thousands of families, it represents hope for a better, more secure, and dignified future.
